“I never had an option to offer my customers a top quality, ready-to-go product. There is a waiting period of at least a few business days when I prescribe a custom night guard, and my patients cannot always afford the time or expense. Dr. Brux is attractive in the literal sense, with colors that make it hard to misplace the mouthpiece, and easy on your wallet. The plastics are the highest quality I have ever seen in an over-the-counter product, I was so impressed with the effectiveness and comfort factors, that I gave one to my wife. DO YOU SNORE OR … BRUX (grinding)?
Dr. Domenico Massironi Surgeon - Odontostomatology specialist Freelance Professional in Melegnano (Milan, Italy)
A lot of adults are affected with oral parafunctions and bad habits such as bruxism, i.e. the tendency to clench and grind your teeth unconsciously and uncontrolledly. It occurs most frequently during sleep, when movements cannot be consciously controlled.
Bruxism is caused by stress and nervous tension, and may do serious harm to your teeth. The most visible damage is progressive wear, possibly with chipping, but most of all those who suffer may also have problems such as: * Dental hypersensitivity to cold and heat * Vertigo and headaches * Chronic TMJ (temporomandibular joint) pain * Neck pains
Bruxism is also one of the main causes of parainsomnias. These are disorders and physical manifestations which occur during sleep and make night-time rest difficult and not restoring.
A recent study has shown that as much as 50% of the population shows significant symptoms of tooth wear due to bruxism. Since the precise cause of bruxism is still unknown, there is currently no effective cure or pharmacological treatment. The only possibility is prevention by wearing a brux night guard, especially at night.
A brux night guard acts as a protective barrier between the two dental arches and keeps the jaw joint in its rest position. Its thickness lengthens the masticatory muscles and consequently decreases the force exerted by them. The result is a decrease in muscular strain, due to stress and tension, thanks to a stretching action on the muscles during sleep.
Until now brux night guards could only be “made to measure” by dentists, who measure the position of the patient's jaw with two dental impressions. A new device has recently been introduced on the market, Dr.Brux®, the first “off-the-shelf” brux night guard available in chemists, which can be fitted by the patients themselves. Just dip Dr.Brux® in boiling water for a few seconds, and put it into your mouth to get a “made to measure” brux night guard which fits your teeth perfectly.
Dr.Brux® is made of a special biocompatible thermoplastic, with two pre-established hardnesses. The softer parts of the brux night guard are those in contact with the outer surface of the teeth and gums, to give stability and comfort. The harder part consists of the rest surface which allows your teeth to slide more easily during grinding and is more resistant to wear.
Among the various benefits of this new device, it is particularly worth mentioning that it can be reshaped several times without its physical and mechanical characteristics changing. If it does not fit well, if your dental situation changes, or if - as often occurs - the brux bite tray gets left on the bedside table for months, have no fear: you can always reshape Dr.Brux® and use it again.
Another unique feature of Dr.Brux® is the three central holes, which make breathing easier when the brux bite tray is used. Dr.Brux® comes in a hygienic case, and is available in four colors so that it can be easily recognized in the family.
Dr.Brux® may also be the ideal emergency replacement for a brux bite tray “made to measure” by a dentist which gets broken, lost or mislaid.
Conclusions
Clinical experiments have confirmed the validity and effectiveness of this new self-shaping brux night guard, above all when its use is recommended by specialists. Since there is a substantial difference in cost compared with a “made to measure” brux night guard it is an alternative which has to be considered for preventing the effects of bruxism, and consequently improving quality of life.
Lastly, it should be remembered that if you have joint, dental or gum problems, or removable prostheses or orthodontic appliances, you should ask your dentist for advice before using a brux night guard.
